Magnetic board

How Many Travel Magnets Can I Keep on a Magnetic Board?

When traveling, we often treat ourselves to a magnet with a motif of the destination we visited. We can collect magnets on a refrigerator or a magnetic board. I wrote about which is better, a refrigerator or a magnetic board, in the article at the link . If you decide to store magnets on a magnetic board, it is a good idea to at least approximately know how big a magnetic board you need. We have prepared a short table where you can quickly find out the ideal size of a magnetic board for your needs.

Board size and number of trips

How big are the magnets?

According to our measurements 😊, the average size of a souvenir magnet is about 2 × 3 inches (5 × 8 cm).
Of course, magnets come in all shapes and sizes, so we’ve allowed for some variation in our calculations — as shown in the table above.

We’ve also included a “travel memory” category, which assumes you bring home a magnet, a photo, and a postcard from each trip. The photo and postcard are each about 4 × 6 inches (10 × 15 cm), which brings the total space needed per trip to approximately 52.7 square inches (340 cm²).

This lets you estimate how many trips’ worth of memories you can fit on a board of a given size.

Pro tip: Go one size up.
It’s almost always a good idea to choose a board that’s one size larger than you initially thought. Once you start adding magnets, notes, and comments, space fills up fast.

Just think — in our family, we collect at least 6 magnets a year, sometimes even 10. That adds up quickly!
